Finland's preliminary population figure 5,489,821 at the end of April
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,489,821 at the end of April. Our country's population increased by 2,513 persons during January-April. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 3,873. The number of births was 1,360 lower than that of deaths.
Population increase by month 2013–2016*
During January-April, 17,429 children were born, which is 671 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2015. The number of deaths was 18,789, which is 339 higher than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary statistics for April, 8,458 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 4,585 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 389 higher and the number of emigrants 64 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,990 of the immigrants and 3,157 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 72,458 during January-April. Compared with the previous January-April, the decrease was 1,761 migrations according to the municipal division of 2016.
