Finland’s preliminary population figure 5,509,984 at the end of September

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of September was 5,509,984. During January-September Finland's population increased by 6,687 persons, which is 6,538 persons less than in the preliminary data the year before. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 8,200 higher than that of emigrants. There was no natural population growth, since deaths exceeded births by 1,513 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January-September 2017, a total of 38,311 children were born, which is 2,269 fewer than in the corresponding period 2016. The number of deaths was 39,824, which is 68 lower than one year earlier.

Altogether 19,625 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,425 persons emigrated from Finland during January-September period. The number of immigrants was 6,274 lower and the number of emigrants 1,937 lower than in the previous year. In all, 6,092 of the immigrants and 7,899 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 224,621 by the end of September. Compared with the previous year, the increase was 3,678 migrations according to the municipal division of 2017.

Same-sex marriages took legal effect in March 2017. A total of 290 women and 125 men entered into marriage in which the spouse was of the same sex during March-September period. In all, 1,448 women and 777 men changed their registered partnership into marriage.

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew only in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi and Åland between January-September of 2017.

The population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it grew by 15,043 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 1,992 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Uusimaa, 9.1 per mil, in Åland, 7.0 per mil and in Pirkanmaa, 3.9 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Kymenlaakso that lost 1,648 persons of its population. The population of Lapland decreased by 1,311 persons. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kymenlaakso and Kainuu, both with loss of 9.3 per mil.

Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 11,317 persons and Varsinais-Suomi, 2,239 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms based on total net migration was attained by Uusimaa, 6.9 per mil and Åland, 5.1 per mil.

In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of North Ostrobothnia, 1,142 persons. In the region of Kymenlaakso the loss was 887 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in the region of Kymenlaakso, 5.0 per mil of the population.

During January to September 2017, migration between regions numbered 111,277, which was 3,627 moves greater than in the previous year. The positive gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi and Åland. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 8,458 persons. The relative migration gain was also highest in Uusimaa, 5.1 per mil of the population.
