Persons with educational qualifications numbered 2,806,000 in 2006

Correction to the release made on 5 Dec. 2007. Figures on doctor's and licentiate's degrees corrected in the table on 16 Jan. 2008.

At the end of 2006, a total of 2,806,000 persons, or 64 per cent of the population aged 15 or over, in Finland held post-comprehensive level educational qualifications from upper secondary general schools, vocational education institutes, polytechnics or universities. The share of population with such qualifications increased by two per cent from the year before. Persons having only completed the basic level of education, i.e. comprehensive school, middle school or elementary school, numbered 1,570,000.

Upper secondary level qualifications were held by 38 per cent and tertiary level qualifications by 26 per cent of the population aged 15 or over. Forty-one per cent of the holders of upper secondary level qualifications were men and 36 per cent women, whereas tertiary degrees were held by 23 per cent of men and 28 per cent of women.
