Energy consumption in 2021 returned to normal levels after the coronavirus year

According to Statistics Finland, total energy consumption in Finland amounted to 1.36 terajoules (TJ) in 2021. Total consumption returned almost to the level of 2019, rising by seven per cent from the previous year. The consumption of electricity went up by seven per cent to 87.1 terawatt hours (TWh). The share of renewable energy continued to grow, being 42 per cent of total energy consumption. The consumption of fossil fuels and peat in total remained almost unchanged, covering 34 per cent of total energy. Carbon dioxide emissions from fuel combustion were in 2021 at the previous year's level at 33.5 million tons.
