Seven per cent of students discontinued their studies in the academic year 2020/2021

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 6.7 per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or a degree discontinued their studies and did not resume education leading to a qualification or degree in the academic year 2020/2021. In general upper secondary education aimed at young people the discontinuation percentage was 4.0, in initial vocational education it was 12.6, in university of applied sciences education (university of applied sciences degrees) 7.4 and in university education (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) 5.7.

  • Discontinuation decreased in initial vocational education and increased slightly in other sectors of education in 2020/2021.
  • Men discontinued education leading to a qualification or degree in all sectors of education more often than women.
  • Of all sectors of education, women discontinued studies least in the fields of health and welfare. Men do not have a corresponding field of education where discontinuation would be equally low throughout.
  • Older students discontinue education more than young students.
