General government debt amounted to EUR 205.7 billion in the third quarter of 2023
According to Statistics Finland, general government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 205.7 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2023. The amount of debt remained unchanged from the previous quarter. Relative to GDP, general government debt stood at 73.7 per cent. General government debt grew by EUR 15.5 billion compared to the respective period of the year before.

Central government debt grew by EUR 1.5 billion
During the third quarter, central government debt grew by EUR 1.5 billion and was EUR 172.1 billion at the end of the quarter. The stock of long-term bonds decreased by EUR 1.0 billion and the stock of short-term debt instruments with a maturity of under one year increased by EUR 2.0 billion from the previous quarter. The stock of short-term loans remained unchanged and the stock of long-term loans remained unchanged.
Local government sector’s debt fell by EUR 0.5 billion
The local government debt fell by EUR 0.5 billion during the third quarter in 2023 compared to the previous quarter. The local government sector was reformed at the beginning of 2023, when the wellbeing services counties started their actual activity. The renewed local government sector's debt was EUR 34,6 billion at the end of the quarter. The local government sector’s stock of long-term loans fell by EUR 0.3 billion during the quarter and was EUR 32.0 billion at the end of the third quarter from the previous quarter.
Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 0.8 billion
Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 0.8 billion from the previous quarter, mainly due to a decrease in short-term loans and stood at EUR 1.9 billion at the end of the third quarter.
