Nearly one-half of household-dwelling units lived in blocks of flats in 2023

According to Statistics Finland, 1.36 million household-dwelling units lived in blocks of flats at the end of 2023, which was 48 per cent of all household-dwelling units. The share has increased by four percentage points from 2010. The share of those living in one-dwelling and two-dwelling houses has decreased by three percentage points over the same period.

Key selections

  • A total of 1.33 million persons were living alone, which was 47 per cent of all household-dwelling units. The share has increased by six percentage points from 2010.
  • Forty-five per cent of those living alone were aged 60 or over.
  • The total number of household-dwelling units was 2.84 million. The number of household-dwelling units grew by 29,000 from 2022.
  • Seventy-nine per cent of all household-dwelling units were small one-person or two-person household-dwelling units.
