Volume of sea transport increased by 14 per cent in July 2024
According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of foreign sea transport was 7.6 million tonnes in July 2024. Sea transport increased by 14 per cent compared to July 2023. Exports increased by 18 per cent and amounted to 3.7 million tonnes. Imports increased by 10 per cent and totalled 3.9 million tonnes. A total of 2.0 million persons were transported in passenger traffic.

Oil products transported most in foreign shipping traffic in July
A total of 1.3 million tonnes of oil products were transported. Ceneral cargo, 1.2 million tonnes, and crude oil, 0.9 million tonnes, were transported second most.
The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, coal and coke as well as timber. The most export-dominated types of goods were sawn wood, fertilizers as well as paper.
Measured by the volume of goods transported, the largest ports in July were, in order, Sköldvik, HaminaKotka, Helsinki, Raahe, and Rauma.
A total of 2.1 million tonnes, or 29 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.2 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 0.9 million tonnes in containers.
Most sea transport between Finland and Sweden in July
Combining imports and exports, most sea transport took place between Finland and Sweden in July, totalling 1.1 million tonnes. Most goods were imported from Norway, 0.7 million tonnes and most were exported to Germany, 0.6 million tonnes.
A total of 2.0 million persons were transported in passenger traffic
A total of 2.0 million persons were transported in passenger traffic in July 2024. In all, 1,064,090 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia, 886,902 between Finland and Sweden, and 25,716 between Finland and Germany. Compared with July 2023, the number of passengers decreased by 1 per cent.
In July 2024, 34,429 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland, which is 21 per cent less than in July 2023.
