Fewer deaths from corona than in the previous year — still 2,200 deaths in 2023

release | Causes of death 2023According to Statistics Finland, mortality decreased by 4.2 per cent in 2023 from the previous year. In addition to the coronavirus disease, mortality from diseases of the circulatory system and memory disorders decreased. Nearly four per cent of deaths were still caused by the coronavirus disease. The number of persons who died of neoplasms, diseases of the respiratory system and accidents grew slightly from the year before. Mortality caused by alcohol also increased.

- Mortality was still around five per cent higher in 2023 than in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.
- Of the cause of death groups, mortality caused only by the coronavirus disease and memory diseases was higher in 2023 than in 2019.
- Diseases of the circulatory system were the biggest cause of death group. Mortality decreased by 2.1 per cent from the previous year.
- A total of 13,900 persons died of neoplasms. This is nearly 400 more than in 2022.
- Over 1,700 persons died from alcohol-related causes. Alcohol mortality increased by 1.8 per cent from 2022.
