According to Statistics Finland, a total of 6.6 per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or degree discontinued their studies and did not resume education leading to a qualification or degree in the academic year 2021/2022. In general upper secondary education aimed at young people the discontinuation percentage was 3.7, in initial vocational education it was 11.0, in university of applied sciences education (university of applied sciences degrees) 8.3 and in university education (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) 6.1.

  • Discontinuation increased in all other sectors of education except general upper secondary education.
  • Men discontinued their education leading to a qualification or degree in all sectors of education more often than women.
  • For new students starting in 2021, the discontinuation percentage was 6.3.
  • Statistics Finland revised the calculation of discontinuation of vocational education in 2022. Comparable figures were produced for four years.
