Number of tonne-kilometres transported by lorries decreased in 2023

According to Statistics Finland, 26 billion tonne-kilometres of goods were transported by lorries in domestic road transport in 2023, down by nine per cent from 2022. The transport performance of goods other than soil materials decreased by 10 per cent and the volume of transport of soil materials increased by eight per cent. The volume of transported goods went down by four per cent compared to 2022 and was 232 million tonnes.

  • The volume of transported goods decreased by 8.9 million tonnes or four per cent and the transport performance fell by 2.5 billion tonne-kilometres or nine per cent in 2023.
  • The share of the volume of transported goods and transport performance of vehicle combinations of more than 68 tonnes both decreased by two percentage points compared to 2022.
  • Measured by the volume of goods, the biggest decline was seen in the groups other non-metallic mineral products, six million tonnes, and coke and refined petroleum products, 2.8 million tonnes.
  • In 2023, the average transport distance of chemicals transported in road transport nearly halved compared to 2022.
  • The transport volume of soil materials increased by six per cent measured in the volume of goods, that is, in tonnes, and by eight per cent measured as transport performance, that is, in tonne-kilometres.
