Domestic and intimate partner violence reported to the authorities increased by 5 per cent in 2023

According to Statistics Finland’s data, there were 12,300 victims of domestic and intimate partner violence offences reported to the authorities in 2023, which is 5.3 per cent more than in the previous year. Close on 9,300 of the victims were adults, which is 3.2 per cent more than in the year before. The number of underage victims was 3,100, which is 12.2 per cent more than in the previous year.

Key selections

  • The number of victims of intimate partner violence committed by their married spouse grew by 10.7 per cent from the previous year.
  • In all, 10 per cent more violence directed at children by their parents was reported than in the year before. Altogether 2,900 cases were recorded.
  • Fifty-three per cent of underage victims were girls and 74 per cent of adult victims were women.
  • Of the suspects of domestic and intimate partner violence, 75 per cent were men. If the victim is a minor, 65 per cent of the suspects are men.
  • The statistics include only cases known to the authorities, by no means all cases of domestic and intimate partner violence are reported to the authorities.
