Number of adoptions decreased again from the previous year in 2023

release | Adoptions 2023According to Statistics Finland, there were 252 adoptions in Finland in 2023. The number of adoptions was 17 (6%) lower than in 2022. The number of adoptions has decreased by 48 per cent since 2010. Of all adoptions, 138 or 55 per cent were adoptions of persons aged under 18.

Key selections
- The number of adoptions has fallen clearly in the 2010s and 2020s. One key factor explaining this is the decline in inter-family adoptions.
- Adoptions of adults make up an increasing share of adoptions. Adoptions of persons aged 18 or over made up 45 per cent of all adoptions in 2023, while the share was 20 per cent in 2013.
- In 65 per cent of adoptions the adopted had been born in Finland. Two-thirds of adoptions of persons born in Finland were adoptions of adults aged over 18.
- Of the adoptions, 86 were adoptions by two parents and 166 were adoptions by one parent.
