Volume of sea transport increased by 2 per cent year-on-year in January 2025
According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of foreign sea transport was 7.2 million tonnes in January 2025. Sea transport increased by 2 per cent compared to January 2024. Exports increased by 10 per cent and amounted to 3.8 million tonnes. Imports decreased by 5 per cent and amounted to 3.4 million tonnes. A total of 0.7 million persons were transported in passenger traffic.

Oil products transported most in foreign shipping traffic in January
A total of 1.3 million tonnes of oil products were transported. General cargo, 1.2 million tonnes, and ores and concentrates, 0.5 million tonnes, were transported second most.
The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, timber as well as ores and concentrates. The most export-dominated types of goods were sawn wood, wood pulp as well as fertilizers.
Measured by the volume of goods transported, the largest ports in January were, in order, Sköldvik, HaminaKotka, Helsinki, Raahe, and Rauma.
A total of 2.3 million tonnes, or 32 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.3 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 1.0 million tonnes in containers.
Most sea transport between Finland and Germany in January
Combining imports and exports, most sea transport took place between Finland and Germany in January, totalling 1.2 million tonnes. Most goods were imported from Norway, 0.8 million tonnes and most were exported to Germany, 0.8 million tonnes.
A total of 0.7 million persons were transported in passenger traffic
A total of 0.7 million persons were transported in passenger traffic in January 2025. In all, 408,410 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia, 279,447 between Finland and Sweden, and 8,771 between Finland and Germany. Compared with January 2024, the number of passengers increased by 11 per cent.
In January 2025, 218 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
