Total energy consumption increased by four per cent in the first quarter of 2006
Total energy consumption was four per cent higher in the first quarter of 2006 than one year before. The growth was caused by colder weather than in the respective quarter of the previous year and by increased generation of condensate electricity. During the quarter concerned, carbon dioxide emissions from the generation and consumption of electricity went up by seven per cent due to increased use of fossil fuels and peat.
The consumption of coal (incl. coke, blast furnace gas and coke oven gas) went up by 22 per cent. Consumption of natural gas went up by five per cent and that of wood fuels by three per cent. Use of oil and peat also increased slightly. Output of hydro power declined by 12 per cent. Net imports of electricity remained almost as high as in the previous year.
