Revised EMU deficit and debt figures for 2006 released

According to Statistics Finland's revised preliminary data, Finnish general government's EMU surplus amounted to EUR 6.4 billion, or 3.8 per cent of GDP in 2006, while the respective figures in 2005 were EUR 4.3 billion and 2.7 per cent of GDP. The central government's surplus increased by EUR 0.6 billion from the previous year and totalled EUR 1.5 billion. The local government's deficit decreased to EUR 0.3 billion. Employment pension funds accumulated a surplus of EUR 4.9 billion. The surplus of other social security funds amounted to EUR 0.3 billion.

The euro denominated EMU debt of general government grew by EUR 0.5 billion from the year before. The growth came mainly from increased debt of local government. However, the share of the EMU debt of gross domestic product fell to 39.2 per cent in 2006 from the previous year's 41.4 per cent, due to growth in the GDP.

Compared to the preliminary data on 2006 published in March 2007, general government's total surplus and EMU debt both became revised downwards by EUR 0.1 billion.

The figures derive from the data reported by Statistics Finland to the European Commission in September.
