General government net financial assets went down slightly in the last quarter of 2011

General government net financial assets, that is, the difference between financial assets and liabilities, amounted to EUR 100.7 billion at the end of 2011. Net financial assets diminished by a total of EUR 1.5 billion from the previous quarter.

General government net financial assets

During the quarter, central government's net financial assets decreased by EUR 3.5 billion, amounting to EUR -34.6 billion at the end of the year. The fall in net financial assets is mainly due to increases in central government sector's short-term loans, money market instruments and bonds, and contractions in cash and deposit assets. At the end of 2011, central government sector's total debt according to financial accounts amounted to EUR 93.7 billion, which is approximately EUR 7.9 billion more than twelve months earlier.

The net financial assets of employment pension schemes and other social security funds stood at EUR 134.8 billion at the end of the quarter, which is EUR 3.1 billion more than at the end of the third quarter but EUR 2.5 billion less than one year previously.

In the last quarter of 2011, employment pension schemes invested approximately EUR 0.7 billion in bonds and decreased their holdings of quoted shares by EUR 1.1 billion.In the last quarter of the year, local government's net financial assets weakened from EUR 1.7 billion to EUR 0.5 billion due to risen loan stock.
