Sales in total trade dropped by 6.5 per cent year-on-year in October

According to Statistics Finland, sales continued declining in all sectors of trade in October apart from motor vehicle trade. Among the sectors of trade, sales in wholesale trade declined most, by 10.3 per cent year-on-year. Sales of retail trade fell, in turn, by 2.6 per cent in October. The decline in retail trade sales was quite evenly divided between daily consumer goods trade and department store trade. In daily consumer goods trade, sales contracted by 2.4 per cent and in department store trade by 2.8 per cent in October from one year ago. However, sales in motor vehicle trade grew by 0.7 per cent from October 2014. The steep decline in wholesale trade pushed the volume of total sales to a drop of 6.5 per cent compared to last year.

In October, sales volume developed more favourably than turnover in all sectors of trade apart from motor vehicle trade

In wholesale trade, the sales volume declined by 7.1 per cent from October 2014. In turn, in retail trade the sales volume fell by 1.1 per cent from one year ago. In motor vehicle trade, the sales volume grew slightly more moderately than turnover in October, by 0.4 per cent year-on-year. The volume of total sales declined by 4.1 per cent from October 2014.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series. The more positive development of sales volume compared to turnover in wholesale, retail and total trade was caused by fallen prices.

Among the sectors of trade, sales in wholesale trade declined most in January to October

In wholesale trade, sales decreased by 5.5 per cent from January to October 2014. In retail trade, the decline in the corresponding period was 1.3 per cent year-on-year. Motor vehicle trade was the only sector of trade where sales increased in January to October, by 0.5 per cent from one year ago. Total trade sales fell in January to October by 3.4 per cent year-on-year.

Annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are given unadjusted for seasonal variation. Annual changes particularly in retail trade may be affected by the number of weekday trading days. There were 27 weekday trading days in October 2015, which is the same as in October 2014. Weekday trading days refer to the weekdays of a calendar month (Monday to Saturday) excluding mid-week holidays.
