Turnover in trade grew slightly by 0.3 per cent in October

According to Statistics Finland, turnover in total trade adjusted for working days grew by 0.3 per cent in October 2019 compared to October 2018. Over the same time period, the working day adjusted volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, increased by 1.5 per cent. The contraction in wholesale trade weakened the development of both turnover and sales volume in October. Turnover and sales volume in retail trade and motor vehicle trade were still growing in October.

Turnover adjusted for working days decreased by 2.4 per cent in wholesale trade while, at the same time, the sales volume only declined by 0.4 per cent. The more favourable development in sales volume than in turnover in wholesale trade is explained by a drop in prices. Turnover in motor vehicle trade increased by 4.9 per cent year-on-year and the sales volume grew by 4.3 per cent. In retail trade, working day adjusted turnover and sales volume both increased by slightly more than three per cent from one year ago. Retail trade was boosted by daily consumer goods, department store and specialised store trade. Growth was fastest in department store trade where working day adjusted turnover was 5.7 per cent and sales volume 5.0 per cent higher than a year earlier.

Turnover and sales volume declined by good one per cent month-on-month

Seasonally adjusted turnover in total trade fell by 1.4 per cent in October from September. Over the same time period, the volume of sales fell by 1.1 per cent. By contrast, in September, turnover and sales volume both increased by more than one per cent from the month before.

During January to October, turnover in total trade adjusted for working days grew by one per cent and sales volume by 0.5 per cent from the corresponding period in 2018.

Trend of turnover and sales volume in total trade

The calculation of indices of turnover of trade is based on the Tax Administration’s data on self-assessed taxes, which are supplemented with Statistics Finland’s sales inquiry. The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

The factors caused by the variation in the number of weekdays are taken into account in adjustment for working days. This means taking into consideration the lengths of months, different weekdays and holidays. In addition, seasonal variation is eliminated from seasonally adjusted series, on account of which it makes sense to compare observations of two successive months as well.

The data for the latest month are preliminary and they may become significantly revised particularly on more detailed industry levels in coming months.
