Nights spent by foreign tourists on level with the previous year in December 2019
Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments increased by 2.0 per cent from last year and 0.99 million nights were recorded for them in December 2019. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 0.4 per cent and 0.79 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.77 million overnight stays, which was 0.9 per cent more than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by Britons decreased by eight per cent in December 2019
Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Chinese tourists increased most in absolute numbers, by 7,900 nights. This was 24.9 per cent higher than in the year before. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Britons, down by 16,000 nights. Their overnight stays were 7.7 per cent down on December 2018.
The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Britons with 191,300 overnight stays. The second largest group was Russians with 73,400 overnight stays. The third largest group was French with 45,600 overnight stays, and fourth were Germans with 44,700 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Chinese tourists (39,800 nights), sixth was Spanish tourists (33,100 nights), seventh Dutch tourists (22,500 nights) and eight Swedes (22,200 nights).
In Lapland, overnight stays by increased by four per cent in December 2019
Examined by region, overnight stays increased most in relative terms in South Ostrobothnia, by 33.9 per cent, and second most in Åland, by 12.5 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Satakunta, by 13.3 per cent and second most in Pirkanmaa, by 12.3 per cent.
Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 236,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 404,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by 1.5 per cent in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by 1.3 per cent from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 30 per cent and that of Lapland 51 per cent.

Overnight stays by resident tourists in hotels increased by two per cent in December 2019
The total number of nights spent in hotels was 1.5 million, which was 0.6 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 1.0 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 680,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.82 million. The number was 1.9 per cent higher than in December 2018.
Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Lapland, 71.6 per cent, and in Uusimaa, 57.7 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 64.2 per cent, 50.3 per cent in Tampere, 55.3 per cent in Turku, 69.7 per cent in Oulu and 91.5 per cent in Rovaniemi.
In December 2019, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 120.78 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 118.36. There was a total of 54,344 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 678 more than in December 2018.

Total number of nights spent grew by 3.9 per cent in January to December 2019
In January to December 2019, a total of 23.1 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 3.9 per cent more than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 16.06 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 7.04 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 4.3 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists increased by 2.9 from the previous year.
Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Chinese tourists increased most in absolute numbers, by 51,300 nights. This was 15.4 per cent higher than in the year before. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Britons, down by 24,800 nights. Their overnight stays were 4.2 per cent down on January to December 2018.
The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 814,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 661,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Britons with 568,000 overnight stays , and fourth were Swedes with 557,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Chinese tourists (384,000 nights), sixth was French (339,000 nights), seventh U.S. tourists (310,000 nights) and eight was Dutch tourists (262,000 nights).
