Cubic volume covered by granted building permits continued to grow in July to September
According to Statistics Finland, in the third quarter of 2015, building permits were granted for a total of 8.3 million cubic metres, which is 30.3 per cent more than one year ago. The growth in the total cubic volume was mainly generated from building permits granted for other than residential buildings. Newbuilding now focuses heavily on Greater Helsinki, especially residential building construction is lively there.

Building permits granted for residential buildings increased from last year
In July to September 2015, the cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings grew by 5.6 per cent from one year ago. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.5 million, of which the share of Greater Helsinki was 1.1 million cubic metres. In the entire country, building permits were granted for a total of 7,500 dwellings, which is ten per cent more than one year earlier. Nearly one-half of building permits for residential buildings were granted for Greater Helsinki.
Building permits granted for detached houses were at a clearly lower level in January to September 2015 than in previous years. Several blocks of flats projects granted in Greater Helsinki kept the number of building permits granted for residential buildings growing, however.
The cubic volume of building permits granted for other than residential buildings grew by 44.7 per cent in the third quarter. The growth was biggest in building permits granted for public service buildings. The growth is caused by a few large building projects in Greater Helsinki.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production
The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised. Due to the renewals in the Population Information System, the accumulation data from one year ago do not fully correspond with the accumulation of the current data and this causes bias in the change percentage calculation. For the latest months, the data still have undercoverage and will be supplemented over coming months.
