Cubic volume covered by granted building permits declined in the second quarter

According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 13.0 million cubic metres in April to June 2017. The cubic volume of building permits granted was 9.0 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year previously. Measured by volume, more permits were granted for the construction of residential buildings and of commercial and office buildings over the period than one year earlier, while other types of buildings fell clearly below the cubic volume of one year ago.

Construction of blocks of flats is still growing

In April to June, building permits for residential buildings were granted for a total of 4.6 million cubic metres. The figure was 7.3 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. The cubic volume granted for residential blocks of flats grew by 27.2 per cent and turned the volume of permits granted for residential buildings positive. The cubic volume of permits granted for detached houses and terraced houses was clearly below last year’s level. During the second quarter, building permits granted for blocks of flats showed the highest figures in the history of these statistics for the number of permits, volume and number of dwellings.

In April to June, building permits were granted for a total of 15,211 dwellings, growing by 17.3 per cent year-on-year. The number of dwellings has developed positively for several years now.

Volume of building production is growing steadily

In April to June, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 12.3 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings increased in the period by 12.7 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 12.0 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 7.3 per cent more building projects and 24.5 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
