Cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew in the third quarter compared with one year ago

According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 7.3 million cubic metres in July to September 2017. The cubic volume of building permits granted was 1.6 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. In addition to residential building construction, growth was recorded for building permits granted for construction of commercial and office buildings, and industrial and warehouse buildings.

Residential building construction grew from one year ago

During July to September, building permits for residential buildings were granted for a total of 2.8 million cubic metres. The figure was 9.3 per cent higher than one year previously. The cubic volume of residential blocks of flats went up by 16.6 per cent in the third quarter. In contrast, the cubic volume of detached houses decreased by 8.1 per cent.

In July to September, building permits were granted for a total of 9,480 dwellings, growing by 10 per cent from the corresponding period of last year.

Volume of building production grew year-on-year

In July to September, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 4.3 per cent year-on-year. The volume was growing strongly in autumn 2016, after which growth has gradually waned.

The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 4.6 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 4.2 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 7.1 per cent more building projects and 23.6 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
