Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased in February to April year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, 14.2 per cent fewer building permits were granted in February to April 2018 than in the corresponding period of one year earlier. The cubic volume decreased in all main categories of buildings from one year back. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings declined most, by 18.7 per cent. The cubic volume covered by permits for industrial and warehouse building and residential building construction also decreased significantly.

Fewer permits for residential building construction

In February to April, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 3.0 million cubic metres, which was 14.3 per cent less than one year earlier. The cubic volume granted for detached houses went down by 19.2 per cent. The long-term strong growth in the cubic volume granted for residential blocks of flats stalled during February to April, when the cubic volume decreased by 14.3 per cent from twelve months back. Building permits were granted for a total of 10,571 dwellings in February to April.

Volume of building production is still growing

In February to April 2018, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 9.8 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 15.3 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 5.4 per cent. Measured by volume, 9.3 per cent fewer building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 2.3 per cent lower than one year ago.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
