In September, output declined most year-on-year, by nearly 21 per cent, in energy supply. Behind the decline is strong growth in the imports of energy. Manufacture of electrical and electronic products diminished by good 5 per cent in September. Output in the chemical industry contracted by just short of 6 per cent. In other metal industry, output continued to rise in September, largely thanks to strong growth in the manufacture of transport equipment. Manufacture of machinery and equipment also grew briskly in September.

In the metal industry, the trend turned upwards in the summer. In 2003, the metal industry accounted for 48 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. In the wood and paper industry, the trend turned upwards when the industrial action ended. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 16 per cent. In the chemical industry the decline in the trend is largely due to maintenance shutdowns in oil refining. The chemical industry generated 9 per cent of the total value added.
