Industrial output decreased by 23 per cent year-on-year in September
According to Statistics Finland, the working-day adjusted output of total industries (BCDE) was 23 per cent lower in September 2009 than twelve months earlier. In August, industrial output decreased by 21 per cent year-on-year. Over the January to September period, industrial output (BCDE) has decreased by 22.9 per cent from the corresponding period of the year before. Over the same time period, output in manufacturing (C) has fallen by 25.6 per cent and the index point figure for January-September stood at 86.0 (2005=100).
Output declined year-on-year in all main industries in September. The largest drop of just short of 47 per cent was recorded in the output of the electrical and electronics industry. In the metal industry output fell by nearly 37 per cent in September. In the forest industry it declined by only 7.9 per cent in September. The last time output has fallen less in the forest industry was in spring 2008. In the chemical industry output declined by just short of 5 per cent in September.
Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing (C) was 71.4 per cent in September, which was good 11 percentage points lower than in last year's corresponding month. In the forest industry, capacity utilisation rate was 78.9 per cent, or over one percentage point down on the year before.

Estimation
In many months of the year the volume index of industrial output uses estimation in industry 26-27, Electrical and electronics industry. In this industry Statistics Finland estimates data 8 times a year. Not all of the data on this industry is at Statistics Finland's disposal at the time of publication. As the weight of the industry (26-27) is under 20 per cent in total industries, using estimation may influence the point figures and change percentages calculated for the volume index of industrial output even if previous months' data on other industries do not become revised.
Revised data for September will be published at 9 am on 10.12.09 in connection with industrial output data for October. Because of the method used, seasonally adjusted figures for previous months may change even if the original figures do not become revised. The seasonally adjusted figures will also be adjusted for working days.
