Reliable data in focus on World Statistics Day

The World Statistics Day is held on 20 October 2020. The theme of this year’s World Statistics Day is “Connecting the world with data we can trust”.

Since 2010, the World Statistics Day declared by the United Nations has been celebrated every five years, and the theme day is now celebrated for the third time.

The World Statistics Day emphasises the importance of reliable data in everyday thinking and decision-making. The aim is to make statistics familiar among the public and increase knowledge of official statistics.

Statistics Finland celebrates the theme day with a whiteboard animation that provides answers to core questions related to statistics: Why are statistics compiled and how are they produced? What is the benefit of statistics? A short version of the animation is shown during the World Statistics Day on the metro car displays in Helsinki.

On the World Statistics Day, Statistics Finland organises a virtual seminar on the significance of reliable data to support democracy.

“The impartiality of statistical agencies and the reliability of statistics must be upheld so that as many persons as possible will also use official statistics in future in the midst of the flood of information,” says Statistics Finland's Director General Marjo Bruun. "Statistical agencies can become more closely integrated with the wider information ecosystem by making their knowledge related to data processing and understanding of data materials more extensively available to society.”

Registration to the European Statistical Competition intended for young people will also be opened on the World Statistics Day.
