Clearly fewer open job vacancies in 2023 than one year earlier

According to Statistics Finland, the average number of job vacancies in 2023 was 54,500, whereas in 2022 the number was 68,300. The annual level data on open job vacancies are based on averages of quarterly figures.

Characteristics of job vacancies

On average, 38,500 or 71 per cent of open job vacancies in 2023 were offered by private enterprises, while the corresponding share in the previous year was 74 per cent. In all, 9,500 or 17 per cent of job vacancies were in establishments of municipalities, joint municipal authorities or wellbeing services counties, while one year earlier the share was 15 per cent.

Job vacancies decreased clearly in industry (B to E) and in the industry group of trade, transportation and storage, accommodation and restaurant activities (G to I). The number of job vacancies also went down in construction (F) and in the industry group of information and communication (J). Changes from one year ago were fairly small in the other industry groups.

Examined on the annual level, the share of part-time and fixed-term jobs among all job vacancies has grown from the year before, while the share of open job vacancies considered hard-to-fill has decreased. Twenty-two per cent of open job vacancies were part-time jobs in 2023, while the corresponding share was 17 per cent in 2022. The share of fixed-term jobs was 35 per cent of all open job vacancies, while one year earlier the corresponding figure was 31 per cent. Employers estimated that an average of 56 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard-to-fill, while the corresponding share was 61 per cent one year earlier.

The number of open job vacancies decreased on the annual level fairly evenly in all major regions and in all size categories of establishments. Compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of open job vacancies decreased in every quarter of 2023.
