Total energy consumption decreased by 4 per cent from January to June
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 716,000 terajoule in the first half of 2008, which was four per cent less than in the corresponding period of the year before. Consumption of electricity totalled 45 terawatt hours (TWh), i.e. just short of 2.5 per cent less than in the year before. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy diminished by nearly 13 per cent when compared with the emissions of the previous year. The favourable water situation in the Nordic countries and ample production of hydro power reduced the consumption of fossil fuels in electricity generation, which led to a markedly bigger reduction in emissions than in total consumption of energy. A mild winter also contributed to the reduced need for heating energy. Energy consumption in industry was also falling slightly.
Considerable decrease in the consumption of fossil fuels
The consumption of coal decreased by 30 per cent in the first half of the year (coal includes here hard coal, coke and blast furnace gas). Consumption of peat decreased by 14 and that of oil by 4 per cent from the year before. By contrast, consumption of natural gas increased by 5 per cent. Consumption of wood fuels stayed nearly on level with the previous year. Net imports of electricity grew by 12 per cent and production of hydro power by 20 per cent. The favourable water situation in Sweden and Norway enabled the increase in electricity imports. In the January to June period production of hydro power was at its highest in the past five years. The highest relative growth was, however, observed in wind power, which grew by 63 per cent. The share of wind power of Finland's electricity is 0.3 per cent. The start of the second emissions trading at the beginning of the year contributed to the weakening of the competitive position of fossil fuels and peat when compared with non-carbon dioxide energy sources.
