Read more about the changeAccording to Statistics Finland, income differentials narrowed in 2023 compared to the previous year. The real income of all income deciles decreased as a result of high inflation. The average income of the population in the lowest-income decile fell in real terms by 4.7 per cent and that of the highest-income decile by 6.3 per cent. The real income level of medium income earners (income deciles V to IX) was 2.1 per cent lower than in the previous year.

- Relative income differentials narrowed. The Gini coefficient received the value 27.9 in 2023. It was 0.7 percentage points lower than in 2022.
- High inflation lowered average real income throughout the income distribution from 2022 to 2023. The average of real income dropped close to the level in 2016 to 2017.
- A total of 736,800 persons belonged to household-dwelling units at risk of poverty, that is, 13.4 per cent of the dwelling population in 2023. The share was the same as in the previous year.
- There were 123,100 children in household-dwelling units at risk of poverty in 2023. This was 12.2 per cent of all children in the dwelling population. The share grew by 0.5 percentage points from the previous year.
